The Verb To Be: spiegazione e uso in inglese
The Verb To Be
LONG FORM | CONTRACTED FORM | EXAMPLE |
I am | I’m | I’m smart. |
You are (singular) | You’re | You’re smart. |
He is | He’s | He’s smart. |
She is | She’s | She’s smart. |
It is | It’s | It’s smart. |
We are | We’re | We’re smart. |
You are (plural) | You’re | You’re smart. |
They are | They’re | They’re smart. |
USO DEL VERB TO BE NELLE FORME NEGATIVE
LONG FORM | CONTRACTED FORM | EXAMPLE |
I am not | I’m not | I am not British. I’m not British. |
You are (singular) not | You’re not You aren’t | You are not British. You’re not British. You aren’t British. |
He is not | He’s not He isn’t | He is not British. He’s not British. He isn’t British. |
She is not | She’s not She isn’t | She is not British. She’s not British. She isn’t British. |
It is not | It’s not It isn’t | It is not British. It’s not British. It isn’t British. |
We are not | We’re not We aren’t | We are not British. We’re not British. We aren’t British. |
You are (plural) not | You’re not You aren’t | You are not British. You’re not British. You aren’t British. |
They are not | They’re not They aren’t | They are not British. They’re not British. They aren’t British. |
USO DEL VERB TO BE NEL PAST SIMPLE
SUBJECT | FORM OF THE VERB “TO BE” in the PAST SIMPLE | EXAMPLE |
I | WAS | I was cold after swimming in the ocean. |
YOU (singular) | WERE | You were cold after swimming in the ocean. |
HE | WAS | He was cold after swimming in the ocean. |

Qui l’unica contrazione è quello della parola “to be” insieme con “not” (+n’t).

USI COMUNI DEL VERB TO BE
NOTA: Avete mai sentito l’espressione “false friend“?
She is 25, I’m 45).
Per spiegare questo è chiaro che possiamo utilizzare “to be”: “He is an engineer.”
Per convertire la frase ad una domanda, basta invertire il soggetto con il verbo “Is he an engineer?”
Qui riscontriamo tanti errori. Ricordati che se la tua frase ha iniziato con “Is” o “Are”, per forza stai creando una domanda in Inglese. A queste domande, ricordate di non contrarre mai le risposte positive (“Yes he is” è giusto, ma “Yes he’s” è errata).
Per le risposte negative invece possiamo contrarre sia il soggetto che il verbo (No he’s not, No he isn’t ; sono entrambi giusti come risposte).
He is an engineer.
In the question from it would be:
Is he an engineer?
And you would respond:
Yes, he is (NOT Yes, he’s) or No, he isn’t.
Other Examples:
Are they your neighbors?
Yes, they are. OR No, they aren’t
Are we ready?
Yes, we are. OR No, we aren’t.
